As
we close the calender on May the cool season crops fade
while the warm season ones really come to life.
Here are a few pictures of our farm at this time of year.
The
"tater patch" is a favorite with the children. Pull back the heavy
mulch and you will find a delicous treat. New potatoes have a thin skin which
is easily rubbed off. These purple skined "Caribe" will be ready soon!!
The
early "Contender" green beans to the right are 3-4" long. The
white bloom below is from a French Filet bean.
Tomatoes
are the treasure of most gardens. The heirlooms shown below are Brandwine, Amish
Paste, Sugar Gem and Principe Borghese, an Itialian drying tomato.
The
Cucumbers are beginning to run. They need hoeing, mulching and their trellis
put up. And I need to get off the computer and get to work. Oh well.
With
the rain and warm weather some of the cabbages are beginning to split open.
It is time for them to go and make room in the grden for something else.
The
old lettuce below is going to seed. We check the new lettuce for pests..
To
the left: straight neck yellow squash, golden bush scallop squash and zucchini.
We scout often for cucumber beetles.
The
broilers above will be on someones supper table soon. My girls are adding fresh
straw to the layers nest box. Have you seen any pictures of how "Big Ag"
produces your eggs and chicken? You probably don't want to see.
Vetch
was planted as a fall cover crop. Most of it was eaten by the hens or plowed
under. A few persistant plants are blooming below.
